galled a-arm stud...need to fix

So after getting my front apart, I noticed one of the studs that hold the upper control arm shaft in place is a little galled at the end, approx. 2-3 threads in from the end, i tried a couple new nuts, but that one place, just has too much material in the stud thread valley. I'm glad it's at the end, or REAL close. What do you guys do to remedy this? I could, buy a tap and die set, but I am not sure if there is even enough room to get it started, although a nut will screw on about 1.5 complete turns..
or grind the outermost threads just beyond the galled area?
Let me know, I am finally getting my control arms back tomorrow, and plan on an all nighter to get her back together.
thx all.
