Here's the problem, H.....E.....L.....P......!!!

Tried to get the motor cranked this afternoon and I am having a problem with the wiring. The starter will not engage and it doesn't have any power going to it from the purple wire and the headlights will not come on. Everything is hooked up. The running lights and the dash lights come on. No blown fuses.
I can run a jumper wire over to were the wire that goes to the starter comes out of the distribution block and it will engage the starter. What the heck?
