3 speed on column hang up issues

I know there have been posts on this before but I couldn't find them on a search. When the linkage gets stuck, there's away to resolve the issue for quite awhile by removing a nut and bolt in the linkage under the hood, placing a drill bit between the two holes to line them up, then tighten everything back together.
I could probably wing it with this knowledge, but I don't get much time before dark and I want to get it right.
Thanks for any help!
Curbie
