Temp Gauge

today on my way home from school, i looked down at my temp gauge and it was maxed out!, no smoke, so i drove home, popped the hood, all the lines had water runnin through em, so i think its safe to say water pump is good and tstat aint stickin, a few hours later, the temp gauge was still half way when i started it up. when i drive it, it maxes out, so i'm thinkin its either the gauge or the sensor, i did just put white faces on my gauges, but it worked for a day after that, so anybody got suggestions before i poke around wastin my time? thanks
