Carb rebuild almost done, but DAMN...
I think I'm the redheaded stepchild of carb rebuilders. I started my rebuild of my Rochester 2G carb on Saturday morning, and I'm still not done.
Turns out the rebuild kit, the float, and some of the hard parts I have to replace were either incorrect or hard to find. I spent most of my time in the car going to NAPA, and arguing with them about the parts I needed (they kept wanting to use the carb number to look up parts, which is how I got the INCORRECT parts to begin with). Literally, it was a process of looking at the pictures in their carb books, and picking out part numbers. So...here's the good news: 1. Finally got a replacement Choke Pull-off. Got the last one in the entire Seattle/Tacoma area. 2. Finally got the correct float. 3. Everything's been cleaned and inspected. Replacement screws found, and the carb is ready to put back together. ok, here's the bad news: 4. Rebuild kit turns out to be WRONG. Gaskets are all the wrong size and shape. Throat sizes in the gaskets are too big, and there's gaskets missing. I had to back-trace the carb kit they gave me through NAPA's carb book, find the gasket included in the kit, look for one in the same group that matches the old one, and then find the kit for THAT one, then order it. Hopefully it will be right (it comes in tomorrow). 5. My dad's German Shepard, which likes to drag stuff out into the yard somehow got into the shop and pulled the rag off the bench that had all of my linkage parts laid out in order on it. I got all the parts ok, but now I don't know how they go onto the carb-I had no camera at the time, so I laid them out in order like an assembly diagram. The instructions with the kit DO NOT show the specifics of the linkage. Anyone have close-up pictures of their Rochester 2G? If someone has this carb can they do me a HUGE favor and go snap some for me? Please? If not I'll have to guestimate using the measurements for adjustment and see if I can get the parts back in the right places... ------------------ '69 3/4 ton C20 2wd w/ 350ci/400THM and a wood bed!
