Shift Linkage Crisis

Need some advice on my 69 bbc. I purchased the lokar cable linkage which was junk so I decided to go with the stock linkage, but it won't shift past drive without hitting the headers. Don't really won't to put a floor shifter in so I thought about cutting the bracket that goes on the tranny and shortening it so it is farther toward the end of the rod and closer to the tranny so it will clear to the inside of my headers. Any pros or cons about this would be greatly appreciated.
