Steering linkage with chopped cross member?

I was at the local junkyard today checking out the latest cars and got to looking around at the early (70's-80's?) chevy G vans and got to wondering if the U-joints out of the steering shaft might work for those with chopped crossmembers.

The were a "pich bolt" style, so they might work, just not sure about the size.

This may be an affordable option in comparison to the flaming river joints.

Anyone think this might work?
