Shorter Throws on Hurst Shifter

I have a saginaw 4 speed in my truck with a hurst compition plus shifter. I was told the shifter came out of a car that came with it from the factory. The shifter was for a consoul car eg 69 camaro, cutlass chevele ect. I had to seperitly buy my instilation kit from summit but the throws are unusewelly long compared to my freands witch are short. First of all why is this? is it because it is a factory shifter? and i''v been told to shorten them is to drill new holes o nthe tabs coming off the transmission. Is that corect? But i'v also been told that those tabs are harden steel so would it make a diference if i re fabed those tabs out of reguler steel so i could drill threw them? Thanks
