Converted Automatic Shifter issues

Hello All!
I'm a newbie. I just bought a 65 short bed fleetside. It was origanally a manually transmisson and someone has put a turbo 350 in. They used a hurst shifter (a junkie one) that is mounted on the floor. I would like to put a bench seat back in the truck and need a new shifter. Could I use a stock colum out of a automatic truck? What if the donor truck was a powerglide and not a 350? Should I just get a new floor shifter and move it farther up the floor board? Ideas?
