Code reading and data logging with computer?

has anyone used an adaptor to read the PCM data, reset the light, and log data? My 99 has a miss under certain load conditions and a TCC that seems to be fading. Would like to look at the data stream to confirm TCC on signal(solenoid is cheap but a @#*#*@ to get at), and figure out which bank my misfiring is on. Not really sure I want to dump $150 on a scan tool that does 'generics' if I can spend $250 and get the cable and PC software for my laptop with data logging etc. parts swapping is too many $$ on this LS (8 coils not 1, 8 injectors, aluminum heads with plugs, etc.) and it's $500 to drive in the dealer's door.

Any experience?
