oil pressure gage

so I hooked one of the 4 I have back up and well befor the motor was started the gage wasshowing, umm I'll say 1/4 of the way of pressure if that makes any sence, so when I started the motor the gage pegged out ot max position, could it be the gage in the start was already 1/4 of the way on the scale so it wont read right or am I just dreaming andall the gages read something even if the motor is not running? 2 of the gages I have, the needle is al the way to the left, the other 2 show the needle about a 1/4 of the way on the scale of the gage, so are they good or?
