Question Steering Wheel Nut

When I got my truck ('71), it the top 2 or 3 threads was stripped off of the steering shaft and the nut was stripped completely.
I had a spare cab, so I went to look at the shaft on it and it was stripped too.

Is this a commin problem on these? Is there an easier fix than replacing the shaft?

I'm going over to my in-laws tonight. He has an old '72 in the woods. I'm going to chack to see what kind of shape the shaft is in on it.

thanks,
Brent
