need help please

i am in the midst of putting in my lowering kit when the shop called and said one of the plates were broken on my drivers side rear leaf springs. He said i must have a heavy duty kit on there because i have 8 plates per lear spring (instead of 4). Is this normal on a 76 fleetside? should i try to find an 8 plate leaf spring to replace the broken one on monday and should i just pull both sides out and replace them both with 4 plate leafs? thanks
Justin
