350 to 700R4 swap

I have a 1972 k10 that I will be swapping out the th350 for a 700R4 on it.
I will be going with the spacer from A & Reds, grinding off the shafts and moving my 205 TC back a couple of inches.
My questions are:
A) do I need a 4X4 700R4 or will a 2X4 work?
B)I read that 86-91 years 700R4 will work best, is this correct.
