Factory wheel restoration

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question but here it goes. I have an 87 4x4 with the factory bullet hole wheels. I am looking to restore them to their former glory. I appears the coating is flaking off. they are aluminum and I suppose all I have to do is sand and clean and shoot with clear. Has anyone done this or have pics of how theirs turned out? What is the best solution?
