Fuel level adjustment?

Ok so my fuel level gauge would only read 3/4 full when I filled my tank and I figured it was just because the copper wire from the reostat to the top was broken and I sodered in some wire so repair it. But I Got a new one from LMC Trucks and it reads about an 1/8th of a tank lower than the stock one did... I can only figure that maybe the float rod needs to be unbent some to get the right level reading. Is this a common practice to adjust the float rod?
