I'd also check the wear patterns on the rod where it was wedged under the crank. It could have very well thrown the rod long before the 'goose' into the snowbank, just the bump from impact knocked the piston further down into the cylinder where the rod then wedged itself in the position you found it.

Otherwise I'm stumped. :P
