Lightbulb Denim seat cover

The original black vinyl on my seat is pretty tired and I'm about to get it rebuilt and reupholstered.

Instead of a repro vinyl cover, I was thinking about asking the shop to cover it in heavy black denim instead, . It should last a long time and take some abuse, but there's got to be a reason you don't see it very often.

I don't have the slightest idea about fabric prices. Can it be done? Will getting a cover made from regular seat type materials be cheaper?
