Bed angle strips: Steel or Stainless?
I have to replace the bed angle strips on my 68 Stepper. I will get stainless for the strips, but I need to decide whether to use Stainless of plain steel for the angle strips. If I use steel, then they will be painted and the rest of the strips will be polished. I like the look of stainless but then there is the problem of how to mount them. I you weld them, then you have the problem of discoloration and a good chance of ruining them. If you bolt them through the bedsides, then there's the problem of the nuts and washers protruding on the outside.
I had the idea to weld in a steel angle iron with the vertical part pointing down, and then capping that with a stainless angle strip that is not mechanically fastened to the bedsides. Here is the initial mock-up. Anyone else tried this? Any problems? other than having to rabbet a step into the first board on the edge?
