Speedo Swap

I am wanting to swap out my 85mph speedo with an earlier 100mph speedo. I realize I will not be able to connect the VSS (guess that's what it's called) little green box to the older style. Question is, can I just remove that box and the wiring going up to the speedo? Or for some reason do I need it there for some sort of resistance for another reason? Yes I know my cruise won't work.

Year is an '87, I think the speedo said it was from like a 76-79. I'm really not seeing any issue with just removing that VSS from the loom, but wanted to be sure.
