Hidden Hitch on 60-66?

I am wanting to eliminate the rear most crossmember on my '63 Short Step to make more room for a fuel tank. Is it possible/good to use a trailer hitch to replace that crossmember? It seems redundant to leave it if you have a good solid hitch.
I like the idea of a hidden reciever, like you see on '67 and up. Have any of you seen one or done this on a 60-66? Built Custom made recievers??
