Tie rod issue

I have a 71 that I am trying to install new tie rods on and my problem is the new tie rod studs are definitely too big to fit into holes. I have read that GM switched to a bigger size tie rod in 71. Is it possible that I may have the older style (smaller) tie rods in my truck? Has anyone else run into this issue before? By the way I have tried two different brands of tie rod and they both didnt fit so I can't imagine it's a manufacturing defect.
