Big block timing?

What are you guys with big blocks running for timing? I am talking about high idle timing, as in max timing. I set the timing at 32* like all the old muscle car forums said and the motor did not like it, simply sounded like to much, spark knock when hot at WOT, I turned the timing down and it seems happier but I just don't know what a good number to run is.

In the GMPP catalog I see the lower HP 454's don't run as much timing as their big HP motors so I feel like I am on to something. Thanks guys!
