po cut steering ????

the guy i got the 63 from had unbolted everything but the cab,said he was getting ready to pull the cab so he cut the steering shaft wtf ??why didnt he just unbolt it from the box?? i was thinking maybe getting a a soild steel rod and welding a round plate to the end of the rod and drilling holes that bolts up to steering box in pic #2 and welding the two shafts together maybe with a sleeve thats slipped over both new rod and old steering shaft ? would that be safe?? never messed with streeing before....or should i just get a steering coulmn from junk yard ..and what year two use i dont want tilt , and something that bolts in? what would you do??
