Is your fuel system primed? Make sure the plastic bleeder screw didn't get cracked, it can leak air out and loose prime, I had this problem after changing my filter once, I ordered a replacement steel bleeder screw to fix it. Also hand primer pump is known to go out, making it difficult to prime.
I bought a non-vented style gas filler cap, drilled a hole in it, and installed a shrader valve. I would just loosen the bleeder screw, put the air hose on the tank, and use the air pressure to push the fuel up, and bleed the air out of the fuel lines, no pumping. Also, my truck became hard/impossible to start when my injectors went out, but I don't think that would happen so suddenly and coincidentally with your filter change.
