Max lift is a debated issue....some sources say .450", others say .470"-480". Myself, i have no clue what the max lift is, but i would proably stay it safe and run about .450" or less.
For your 700R4, i would look for a '87 or newer model. In '87 they made alot of changes to the tranny, and beefed it up quite a bit. The older modles are supposed to be weaker and more finicky. They used the 700R4 up to '93 i think, and some models were called the 4L60. After '93, the tranny was converted to computer operation and became the 4L60E. Good luck!
