Heater Hose Connection Question.

I just picked up a new radiator from Autozone for my 71 350/350, and it doesn't have a connection for the heater hose, which my old radiator does. I see in the service manual that on manual transmission trucks the heater hose goes to the water pump, not the radiator. Any reason that won't work on my automatic?
If not, what does the connection at the water pump look like? There are two plugs on the water pump; one at the top and the other on the passenger side. Do I need to get a fitting to thread into one of these?

Thanks,

Richard
