Tilt-Column gear selector question

I have to replace my turn signal switch in my '72 tilt column. While I'm in there is there anything I can try to get my gear selector to be more convincing in gear selection?
It's an auto trans, but the column lever seems to slide around too easily between P-R-N-D-2-1, and doesn't really need to be pulled forward to move from one to the other. It doesn't have an obvious feel when it's in any of these positions.
