Plywood is generally 1/2", 5/8" (expensive) and 3/4" (more expensive). If kept dry, OSB is cheapest and very strong/square but not as attractive. Even if you use cardboard, you will have to anchor your shelves directly into your studs. Regardless; Shanes right. Do your interior walls with drywall. And tape the seams.
