88 Suburban--shattered tailgate window

Saturday I was loading up the Suburban for a run to the local dump. The tailgate, when I initially closed it, hung up on some cardboard, I moved it and shut the tailgate. Then I heard the little pieces of glass falling into the bottom of the tailgate. Yup, busted rear window.

I have no idea how it happened, and now the tailgate is jammed shut. I took off the panels and guess I'll have to pull the rods to manually open the tailgate.

Have any of you had a rr window shatter, and what caused it? I'd hate to get a new piece of glass only to see this happen again.

Thanks in advance,

Kurt
