full time 4x4 question

the other day I had my 79 Chevy 4x4 and I was out playing around and I had it in Hi loc with the hubs locked, I was going to pull back on the road so I unlocked the hubs and put it in what I though was High range because the hi loc light went out in the dash but it was actually neutral in the transfer case. What am I doing wrong I don’t feel any kind detent for regular high range. Is it alright to drive like with it in hi loc with the hubs unlocked? If anyone could shed some light on this it would be graciously appreciated. I used to be able to run it in regular high range but now I cant find it.
