Coolant overflow tank

Just found this site and what at great sorce of information, thanks to all. My swap is a 5.3 into 1965 1 ton dually hauler custom built by my father in law in the late sixties. I am using a 3 row Champion aluminum radiator with a cap on the passenger side tank, do I need to run the factory overflow tank ?
I am running my steam line to a fitting on the tank just below the radiator cap that is higher then the engine. Any help would be great.
