68 grille paint question.

What color should the area be directly behind the trim hoops? I'm painting the grille the body color instead of white and the front clip I bought had been painted before. I know when I sanded through the existing color white was underneath. For some reason I was thinking those flat areas behind the hoops were a silver tone. Plus, since I have the goops and these other pieces out of the shell, I was wondering if standard rivets would be sufficient to reinstall the flat pieces back in the shell?

Thanks,
Danny
