engine casting # 3892657 questions?
I have had a 67 truck for ages and had some strength and some time and decided to strip it down. Body is wasted but interior and chrome are all good , which I needed to finish another truck. A great parts truck and maybe a fantastic one if somebody can tell me about the engine casting number.
I decided to check the number because I had been told it was a 283, got it from a guy who ordered it and bought it new. I he ordered it with a 327 and the paper work he gave me showed it but when it came in he was told it had a 283. Didn't make sense to him then and me when I got it from him. It didn't run like a 327 had power but seemed a little down, all the correct original parts were on it, only maintenance items replace. So a low mileage abused never registered farm truck. Like I said the body was beaten on between his driving and all the fertilizer, mud etc. Finally, I am getting to the point, looked up casting numbers and where I usually check, my little black book , it came back as a 67 302 engine block, casting date jan 14 67. Took a breath , drove home and looked it up 2 other places and one said the same thing 67 302 and the other said 65-67 302 /327/350. I haven't pulled the pan but did run the head casting numbers, they came back as 67 327 300 heads, not standard truck castings and not what come on a z/28 302. The date codes were from jan 4 67. I won't have time this coming week to pull the pan but I did pull the flex plate and it looks like a forged crank, a wide parting line and could really tell but when I hit it with a hammer it had the ring sound like a forged one make Tell me I have a one year 67 Z/28 engine block I can sell for big bucks...........and mean it to be true. What do I have? Thanks, Steve |
