My 292 which is 48 years old internally and has 147k on it runs at 30 pounds cold and 15 pounds hot...plenty of pressure...If I was you, I would pull the pan..clean the pickup screen out and put a new stock pump in...they run as cheap at $30 bucks. And the ultimate oil for these is straight 30.

thank you for the tip, upon further investigation i boiled it down to the wrong length dip stick, and when the PO had it rebuilt, the oil pickup tube wasn't set at the correct height from the oil pan's bottom. so when the dip stick indicated "full" i was 1.5 quarts low on oil. when i would stop hard, or be facing down a hill, the oil pressure would bump up. going up hills it'd sink like a rock. oil was sloshing in the pan.
added bit more oil and BAM! 45 -50 lbs when running cold.(little high cuz of all the Lucas). truck runs FANTASTIC now. ah hah! love when things are a simple fix. once again thank you for the help T.J MCCAULEY
