Ya they are, but boxing them is very simple because of that. A break and a sheet of 1/8" is all you need (welder too, duh).
If I were to build a tow rig out of an older truck like this, thats how I'd go, since you can retrofit enough HD suspension and drivetrain peices to "make" a 2500hd yourself.
