If you are pulling the distributor than you might as well set the engine to TDC and the distributor rotor to #1 then re-install. If the distibutor doesn't want to go all the way in then just put light pressure on the rotor and have a helper bump the starter and it should just fall right in. It is much easier that way than pulling it in and out multiple times to adjust the oil pump drive shaft.
