Pros and cons of different steering box ratios?

As I understand it there are two ratios available for 4x4 boxes and about three available on the 2wd models. My question is, why would a person want one ratio over the other? I'm guessing a quicker ratio would be better for street use and a slower ratio would be better for off road?

If a person had a dd, what ratio would they want vs. Someone with a mostly off road truck and why?
