4WD Front hub question

Earlier today I tore down the front brakes/hubs on my K2500 to replace the rotors, and when I got everything apart I noticed that the right side had a shim on it that the left side did not. The shim was underneath the outermost piece with the dial in it. I'm assuming that both sides should have this shim correct? And are there supposed to be any gaskets or seals between the sections of the hubs? The last person to have this apart just put a thin layer of silicone, which worked fine, I'm just curious about the correct way these should be sealed up. Thanks for any info (And no I don't have an assembly manual to look this stuff up)
