Why didn't my Dad's truck have a mirror? Were they optional?

My Dad had a new 1868 GMC 910 (same as the US 1500) that had West Coast Junior mirrors. The cab had no rearview mirror, nor any bracket for one, nor did he remove it.

I think I remember a round circle of white that could have been an adhesive disc, but I don't recall truck mirrors ever being mounted that way.

Anyway, I'm wondering if when you got big optional trailer mirrors if the interior mirror was somehow optional? I don't recall seeing them on a SPID ever.
