Fuel Tank relocation

I have a 67 c10 Long bed that I recently had the fuel tank removed from behind the seat to under the bed behind the rear axle. The fuel cap sticks out from the side of the truck about 4". The tank was mounted under the frame with straps that are about 2" short on one side. I have not been able to fill the tank with out slowly squeezing the trigger on the pump. I am concerned about the tank being inches above the ground with nothing to protect it. Should I be concerned?
