New Resr Springs Too Wide for Hanger

I have a 1949 3100 and recently purchased new rear lowering springs. I tried to install them but the spring is too wide for the hanger. The old spring measures about 1.69" the new one is 1.72-1.74". Has anyone had this same problem and what was done to fix it? Thanks Russ
