Re: Old Man Truck - 1967 C20
I've had very good luck with Valvoline VR1 SAE 30 weight Racing oil. Oil was changed every 2,000 - 2,500 miles. I ran one 292 engine on that for 250,000 miles in 25 years -- gradually working up to 50 weight by the last few years. When I rebuilt, I went back to 30 weight racing oil. In winter, especially if leaving the desert for the mountains [I was a ski addict] I used Valvoline 20W-50. If not running VR1, [since I found out about it], I add a bottle of STP for the ZDDP content. Not necessary with Valvoline Racing, as it has enough zinc, and too much is corrosive. Zinc has been gradually phased out of motor oils since its deleterious to platinum in catalytic converters. This vintage has no cats, but we need the ZDDP to prevent cam lobes from wiping out on hydraulic lifters.
I use Wix filters, now, p/n 51060. I used to use Fram or AC PF-35. That's the long filter.
I have used other brands, Chevron, Shell, Castrol, but I prefer Valvoline Racing. For a while you couldn't get it.
