T5 in a 1952 3600 AD

This is a write up of how we put a T5 1" 14 spline into a 1952 3600 that has a 250 Chevy 6 in it already. Many people have done this but no one seems to have finished their write up or maybe project and few list parts used in detail or at all. So we tried to take the hassle out of sourcing wrong parts and figuring out what works with what and getting a headache from the internet.

It is limited in scope to 1947-54 3100 to 3800 with a 230 or 250 inline 6 and
possibly 292. Please read the FAQ at the bottom before you ask me any questions.

This document is specific to the above title. This is what we did and it works as it should without disc chatter, binding or disc/spline slap on disc engagement and disengagement. There is no cutting of splines or bearing collars or input shafts or other mods except the driveshaft and cross member if you remove it or modify it. This is a bolt in swap.

I’m not sure about 292, it should work but its torque may be too high for the T5 and not sure about other engines or other years past 1959 but it should work. I just don't know enough about T5's to go beyond this document and give accurate information.

Its specific to a T5 on a 230, 250 Chevy 6 cylinder which could in theory be in anything. The hydraulic clutch takes the headache out of the clutch linkage setup. We used the original clutch pedal and mounted the Wilwood master on the frame rail. The Wilwood slave is a push or pull, we used it as a pull and made a bracket to mount on the back of the transmission and connect them with the Allstar braided hose. Any brand hose that size and length would work. -3AN straight x 3/8-24 Inverted 90 degree, 24 inches long. New bolts need to be used and check for proper engagement of thread into the flywheel, crank and pressure plate cover. Typically 1.5 time the diameter thread engagement is standard.

Below is what you need to swap a 1989 S10 2.2L 2WD T5 Transmission w/14T input shaft onto a 230, 250 Chevy inline 6 cylinder in a 1947 to 1954 Chevy Truck, original transmission cross member removed using a hydraulic clutch and non-hydraulic throw-out bearing.

Flywheel 1985 Camaro 10.5" 153T, PHT 6516-121211 or 6516 Brute Force.
Flywheel bolts NEW not used. MRG-912 , 7/16-20 x 1”

Throw-out bearing, 1697C national, long type, used on CHEVROLET 1942-1980, try early 60’s late 50’s 235, Bore=1.376", Outer Diameter=2.7656", (tall)Width=1.9531"

Clutch Disc, 716104: McLeod 10.5 Diameter 1” 14 Spline Clutch Disc. Not the $89 speedway Flathead disc for T5, It’s different. This is custom made with the proper hub off set with the proper diameter disc. You do not need to cut back the splines to eliminate binding. While the Astro van disc has the correct spline it’s not positioned right and is 11”, too large for this flywheel, clutch package and bell housing. The S10 9-1/8” disc has the correct spline but its 1-1/8” to small on the OD for the flywheel and over hangs the pressure plate inside diameter by an 1/8 – 3/16 making the effective area about 8.25”, A pinto has a one thats bigger.

Pressure plate. M-Pact 361874 others will work, fits many GM cars and trucks, CHEVROLET C10 PICKUP 1963-1976
Bolts are MRG-910.

Fork, Cast steel type, ATP ZA-104, CHEVROLET C10 1961-1972

Small bellhousing, Aluminum, GM # 3858403 67-75, 76-81 Chevrolet. 53-81 corvette. 153T bell, 4-5/8" center hole (4 speed car Muncie, Saginaw, T10). Not SM 465 or 1963 small bearing retainer transmissions.

Hamilton T5 spacer from Hamilton Intakes this makes it so you don't have to cut the shaft or bearing collar. It goes between your bell hosing and transmission. You will need 4 Allen head screws a ½” longer than the original bolts. They may come with this adapter but if they don't they are 1.5” to 1.75”long.

Clutch hydraulics.
Hydraulic clutch ram, Wilwood – WIL260-1333
Hydraulic hose, Allstar ALL46332-24, -3AN x 3/8-24 Inverted 90 degree 24 inches long
Pedal master cylinder, Wilwood - WIL260-3376
LMC Clutch return spring 30-3161
LMC Clutch rod pivot nut 30-0912, you need this so the pull rod does not bind at the fork
LMC Fork Boot 30-1920

FAQ.
1. I want to swap a T5 into an XYZ whatever car/truck/boat/barbeque what do I need? If it’s not a 1989 T5 onto a 230 250 Chevy in a 47-54 truck I have no idea. But if your doing pork ribs with that barbeque swap call me!!!!

2. My buddy’s uncle’s secretary’s nephew says he heard on the internet that the Speedways Flathead disc will work and its cheaper. Great, Call them when it doesn’t work, don’t call me.

3. Can I change out part X for part B? You can do anything you want, you just can’t call me when it doesn’t work.

4. What years have a 1” 14 spline? We used a 1989 2.2L 2wd. There are hundreds of sites that will tell you what years use a 1” 14 spline.

5. Can I use a different spline transmission? Sure, but that’s a different swap and not covered here and I have no idea what parts you need.

6. Do I need to use the original transmission cross member? I would try to if you can, it is a structural part for the front suspension keeping the springs from twisting the frame at that point on suspension flex and supports the frame horns for the cab mounts. We did not use it only because it was not there to use. If you’re using an MII or variant IFS then I would not use it, it would just be in the way and not needed.

7. Can I use a hydraulic throw-out bearing? No Idea. Maybe.

8. How much does it cost to do this swap? Depends on parts and availability in your area and how bad you want them.

9. Do you have any pictures? Nope not a one. Just to busy lately for pictures.

10. Do you plan on doing other T5 swaps for other engines and doing a write up anytime soon? Nope, I barely got through the spelling on this one and still may have spelling and grammar errors. Good luck......
