I know this will sound annoying and pedantic, but it worked for me. Before I rebuilt my first engine read about 3 different books on how to do it. By halfway through the second one I was starting to get it. By the end of the third I think I had it. But I sure didn't know what I needed to know after the first, let alone before it.

Anything by Rick Voeglin is usually good. His Engine Blueprinting book is great.

Every motor I ever built made more than 500 horsepower and is STILL running today. But I am glacially slow and careful and clean because I am not an expert.
