alternate materials used for grills or modified grills

Hello,
I've been kicking around ideas for a replacement grill for my 72 C10 custom deluxe. I don't have a problem with a "custom" look. I'm afraid a repo grill will not be up to my standards vs the cost. I've looked at some of the bar type grills, billet is absolutely out of the question. Some of the newer grills they put on newer trucks, from the aftermarket look gaudy and most likely block way too much air flow. I though about a perforated sheet that is honey comb with 79% open area and then putting a air dam on the front to catch more air. I think stainless would look cool, but they don't make the Honey comb stuff like that. I could get it powder coated black or silver as the truck is black with the white cab roof, and that would look good, but not sure how well that would hold up to rock chips and such over time.
If you guys have any ideas or pictures of what you did lets see them!!!

Thanks!
Richard
