12 bolt cross shaft retaining bolt snapped off, any clever...
Ideas on how to remove it?
Hello, I picked up this 12 bolt, 5 lug rear end the other day knowing it was in rough shape but hey, it's a 5 lug. Someone was using the bed as a dump trailer and never did any service on it. The drums are rusted onto the axles and 4 days of penetrating oil is not working, however that's the least of its problems. While I don't claim to Mr. Goodwrench, I surmise the yoke on the pinion shaft hit something damaging the crush sleeve causing the pinion gear to ride on top of the carrier gouging teeth marks in it. The pinion shaft moves forward and back a 1/2 inch or so. This sent metal shavings into the gear oil and created what looks like metallic pudding. It was only when I cleaned off this thick goop that I noticed the retaining bolt what broken off. I can shove a small screwdriver into its hole a good 3/4 of an inch so that gives you an idea of how much of the bolt is missing and how far into the bolt hole it is. Anyone run into this broken bolt situation? I am thinking ever thing inside must be damaged and I would like to at least be able to remove the axles. Here are some photos and thank you for any help. |
