How Do you remove the Shifter on a SM465

I pulled my motor and rebuilt the top end and am having one hell of a time lining the motor and tranny up so I decided to drop the tranny, bolt it to the motor and drop it in as one. Now the problem, the shifter handle is like 8 feet long and has to be removed. I can't figure it out, wether it is screwed in real tight or is the a secret I am not aware of. My haynes manual isn't helping much. What do I do?
