Weird L59 motor, and bearing clearances question
Good morning.
First post on this pretty neat board. I'm working on an L59 that eventually will find a home in my 1966 C10 longbed (my dad bought this truck in July 1966 for a little over $2,000 and it is the truck I learned to drive on). At any rate, the 283 that was in it was good for a boat anchor, as it sat outside with no intake manifold for about a decade (I was working at the time, since retired). I bought what some guy told me was an LM7 from a 2003 Tahoe. When I tore into it, discovered that it was a 2004 motor, had the large injectors for flex fuel (L59 version), but the weird thing is it had flat topped pistons and floating pins, neither of which were factory for this engine. So evidently at some point, someone got into it to do some tinkering. That's the weird part. I just got it back from the machine shop (bored .020" over) and am in the process of reassembly, so here's the bearing clearances question.
Using a cheap Chinese micrometer and dial bore gauge setup, the journals were about 2.0995", and the deviation from there for the journal sizes ran from .0010 to .0015 with the majority being around .0012. I know that the GM original spec was .0009 minimum and I'm really close to that mark. I engaged the Google Co-Pilot for a chat and the bottom line is "he" thinks that it'll be fine as I'm not hot-rodding it....it's a truck. Wanted to get other's opinions. I'm thinking before I take the time to put it all together I maybe should get some extra clearance shells? Thoughts?
