HELP !!! Ball Joint Install / See Picture

I am rebuilding suspension on my 72 C10 Burb and am fitting the upper control arms with new ball joints at this moment. The ball joint came packaged with a rubber dust boot mounted to a steel plate. Do I drop the boot in through the top of the control arm or secure it from below? It is a really tight fit from the top and I cant seem to cram it through the hole. Maybe if I lube it? Any thoughts or experience? See picture below.
